The Effects of Care Burden of Family Caregivers of Terminal Cancer Patients on Their Anxiety and Depression: Focusing on the Mediating Effects of Bonding Social Capital and Bridging Social Capital

Abstract
This study aims to examine the effects of care burden of family caregivers of terminal cancer patients on their anxiety and depression and to verify the mediating effects of bonding social capital and bridging social capital on the relation between care burden and anxiety and depression respectively via stress process model. Total 263 people were surveyed from Seoul and its satellite cities, Choongnam Province, and Busan City. The data were analyzed via structural equation modeling analysis. In addition, Sobel test was conducted to verify the significance of the mediating effects. The results are as follows. First, the care burden significantly increases anxiety and depression respectively. Second, care burden significantly decreases bonding social capital, and the bonding social capital decreases anxiety and depression respectively. Third, care burden significantly decreases bridging social capital, and the bridging social capital decreases depression, but the bridging social capital does not significantly decreases anxiety. Fourth, the mediating effects of bonding social capital on the relation between care burden and anxiety and depression was verified respectively. In addition, the mediating effects of bridging social capital on the relation between care burden and depression was verified as well. Based on these results, this study suggested several proposals how to decrease care burden, anxiety and depression by increasing bonding social capital, and how to decrease care burden and depression through increasing bridging social capital.
